The I-270 at Watkins Mill Road Interchange project was a $90 million project for the Maryland State Highway Administration with two goals. Connect the communities of eastern and western Gaithersburg City separated by the highway and provide major congestion relief for one of Maryland’s most heavily traveled roadways in Montgomery County. I-270 divided the city in half and prevented visitors and residents from having easy access to businesses, hospitals, public service buildings, and houses on either side. This project is a result of Montgomery County DOT’s desire to create another crossing of I-270 and connect the communities of eastern and western Gaithersburg City that were currently separated by the highway.
The I-270/Watkins Mill Road interchange includes a new four-lane bridge over I-270, with connecting entry and exit ramps providing direct access for interstate travelers. This connection will reduce congestion at the I-270/MD 124 interchange and the MD 124/MD 355 intersection. It will also create access from one side of I-270 to the other for bicyclist and pedestrian traffic.
GPI provided both construction management and inspection and environmental services on the project. CMI services were provided under GPI’s Maryland State Highway Administration’s CMI, District 3 contract and included Regional Construction Engineer, Area Engineer, Lead Structures Inspector and Construction Inspector services.
