UESI, a wholly owned subsidiary of GPI, played a crucial role in constructing the foundation for the new Security Anti-Intrusion Fence, showcasing its unique expertise. The project presented distinctive challenges as the water temperatures fluctuated between 95-112 degrees. Situated approximately 200 feet from the discharge of a power plant, the jobsite featured 2.5 knot currents with zero visibility.
The UESI crew faced a multitude of tasks, including conducting in-depth surveys of the bottom contour, utilizing pneumatic tools to shape the bottom to the desired grade, and burning 14-inch “H” piles in preparation for setting an 80-ton concrete foundation slab. Following the placement of the slab and an extensive shimming process, concrete was pumped through the slab to secure it in place at the bottom.
Once the bottom slab was positioned, 50-ton prefabricated slope pieces were placed on either end of the canal. The slope pieces were secured using turnbuckles, come-alongs, and a series of studs and hardware. After locking in the slope, sheet piles were driven and sealed with rip-rap bags and hydraulic cement. Concrete was then pumped in two separate 11-foot lifts. The final phased involved placing two 30-ton abutments pieces on either side of the canal.
As the second phase commenced, the UESI crew remobilized and undertook approximately three hours of diving in 110-degree temperatures to set templates on all sets of bolts. They meticulously checked to ensure that all hardware fit securely on every stud by hand, demonstrating UESI’s commitment to precision and excellence.
