UESI, a wholly owned subsidiary of GPI, had the opportunity to do rehabilitation work on two artificial reefs, Red Reef Park Snorkel Reef, and North Jetty, in Boca Raton, FL. On the existing reef, UESI constructed additional reef modules to form a complete snorkeling trail. Each of the additional 21 reef modules was constructed from limestone rocks in the form of three- and four-foot boulders. By its completion, the snorkel reef site had over 540 tons of limestone boulders added.
UESI faced many challenges during this project’s construction, such as navigating large barge equipment in shallow waters and environmentally sensitive areas. There were staging limitations for the reef materials and difficult offshore weather conditions were encountered. UESI’s experienced and skilled personnel, along with effective management, enabled them to navigate and overcome these challenges, leading to the successful and safe completion of the project.
UESI played a pivotal role in bringing two counties together to complete this project by negotiating a work service donation to the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program. This service allowed UESI to utilize St. Lucie County’s Harbor Pointe Park Facility to stage material and load barges for deployment to Boca Raton. By making a charitable donation, UESI is actively contributing to building a strong presence and fostering relationships in our local community.
