The City of Saratoga Springs, with a population just over 28,000, has long been a draw for visitors attracted by its mineral baths, thoroughbred race course, and scenic beauty on the edge of Adirondack Park. Improving the safety, mobility, and efficiency of city streets for tourists and residents alike was the goal when the city tasked GPI with developing a plan to implement state-of-the-art Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology.
As a prime consultant, GPI developed an ITS master plan for connecting 46 signalized intersections and central traffic signal control system to a new traffic management center (TMC). Variable message sign (VMS) boards, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, and other current and future ITS input elements were also integrated into the design for the traffic signal communications network (TSCN).
GPI’s design for the TSCN employed of a variety of communication methods for sending traffic information in real time, including fiber optic cable interconnection and broadband radio links to cellular modems. GPI extensively coordinated with utility companies to manage approvals to run fiber optic cable from network demarcation points to individual signal controllers. The TMC design included details and specifications for the traffic control workstation, hardware and software, and environmental controls.
Developing the master plan began with GPI’s review and inventory of existing signals and equipment, proceeded to an assessment of ITS needs, and resulted in detailed options for immediate, short-term, and long-term action plans. GPI presented a summary of the findings and proposed action items to the Saratoga Springs City Council for consideration and approval.
