Delaware Department of Transportation I-95 and SR 896 Interchange

The I-95 & State Road (SR) 896 interchange is an essential part of the Mid-Atlantic section of the broader I-95 corridor for both East Coast passenger and freight movement. Critical to the regional areas, this section of I-95 also services connections such as: Amtrak, SEPTA, CSXT, Philadelphia International, BWI, Wilmington Philadelphia Regional, and New Castle Airports. The volume of traffic has dramatically increased in the interchange was built in 1963 and required renovations to decrease accidents and maintain mobility for local and through traffic.

The construction project includes reconfiguring existing interchange ramps, widening I-95 northbound and southbound, widening and rehabilitating existing bridges on I-95 and SR 896, and constructing new bridges, retaining walls, sign structures, and lighting. The improvements include the reconstruction of all ramps and require the construction of six new bridges and modifications/rehabilitation to another nine existing structures, totaling 15 bridges under construction in this contract.

GPI is the Engineer of Record for three curved structures on the newly proposed ramps and for rehabilitating four existing structures carrying traffic over I—95 and SR 896. A separate path will also span the interchange, providing a connection for bicycle and foot traffic from Newark to Glasgow. Additionally, GPI provides oversight and quality assurance for all 15 bridges on the job. The final plans for the project are complete and are currently in construction. The $280 million project is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
