The $228 million I-480 Valley View Bridge / Design-Build is the largest active project in Ohio and the fourth largest in ODOT history.
Originally constructed in 1975, the existing I-480 twin bridge structures over the Cuyahoga River Valley were at their useful service life. The bridges are two of the most heavily traveled structures in Ohio, carrying up to 180K vehicles per day. With no viable detour routes, traffic studies by ODOT determined that replacing the concrete superstructures of the existing bridges using a phased construction approach would have resulted in unacceptable traffic delays during construction. The need for a third center bridge structure was confirmed.
The new center bridge will allow the six-year project to be constructed with minimal impacts on the traveling public. It will also provide a permanent increase in traffic flow improvement for both I-480 EB and WB by eliminating existing ramp merge conditions on both project ends. In addition, future maintenance will have far fewer traffic impacts due to the extra lanes available after project completion.
GPI provided Project Management, Construction Quality Assurance, Inspection, Project Documentation and EEO/DBE Compliance Review.
