New York State Department of Transportation Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Design-Build Project

The Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, situated in the Bronx, New York City, is a massive hub for wholesale food distribution. As one of the world’s largest and busiest, it plays a crucial role in supplying a significant portion of the food supply for New York City and beyond.

The Hunts Point peninsula houses over 800 industrial businesses, employing 25,000 workers. Buyers and sellers from the region gather at the 329-acre complex, resulting in heavy traffic, with over 78,000 vehicles daily, including 13,000 commercial trucks. This contributes to severe congestion in the local streets and affects air quality.

To alleviate congestion, upgrade infrastructure, and enhance residents’ quality of life, New York State started the Hunts Point Access Improvement Project. Managed by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the project includes three phases. Upon full completion, it will offer direct access to the complex from both the Bruckner Expressway and the new Sheridan Boulevard. This redesign aims to ease congestion, improve safety with direct truck access, and notably decrease noise, truck idling, and air pollution concerns.

GPI is the primary designer for the reconstruction of the Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard. Their responsibilities include structural design, such as deck replacement, new on and off ramps to the expressway, and widening of the expressway viaduct. The 1.4-mile expressway deck replacement uses UHPC link slabs to minimize the number of expansion joints on the structure. Structural rehabilitation includes steel pier repairs, concrete repairs, replacing overhead sign structures, fixing retaining walls, and replacing over 1,900 elastomeric bearings. GPI performed load ratings and foundation design for the piers and abutments for the new ramps supported on mini piles. Additionally, GPI leads civil engineering efforts, overseeing subconsultant work for roadway reconstruction and adding a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicycles along the entire corridor. The renovated boulevard below the viaduct has 15 local street intersection reconstructions, including full-depth pavement replacement, signal replacements, drainage improvements, and utility design and coordination, including relocating water and gas mains, and communications and electrical services. GPI is also designing Intelligent Transportation System upgrades.
