Springfield, Vermont, is a charming historic town in the southern part of the state, near the New Hampshire border. Residents and visitors alike can explore the town’s rich heritage, history, and natural beauty. With the Black River, Connecticut River, and local trails and forests, outdoor activities are available for all seasons.
Constructed in 1882 on edge of Black River Falls, the Cobb and Derby grist mill and the Richmond J Kenney saw and planing shop buildings played a significant role in Springfield’s history. Despite being part of the downtown historic district, a 2017 assessment revealed their deterioration due to the passage of time and exposure to the elements. Modifications had been made to both structures, resulting in the removal of many historic elements. While the historic district featured well-preserved examples of the town’s milling heritage, these two buildings faced irreversible challenges. In response, the township authorized the demolition of the deteriorated structures and seized the opportunity to transform the site into a 1/3-acre park, preserving the memory of Springfield’s milling history in a new and accessible way.
Comtu Cascade Falls Park is a key element of a $7 million infrastructure enhancement plan devised by GPI for the main street area. Overcoming grading and accessibility challenges, the design transformed a 24-foot elevation change into three terraces, linked by stairs, ramps, and retaining walls on the foundations of previously demolished buildings. These challenges turned into opportunities for engaging views and exploration. Salvaged remnants of old stone steps and foundations were incorporated, and deliberate arrangements of river views were created to evoke excitement and a sense of discovery.
