GPI Receives AMPP Excellence in Coating Craftsmanship Project Award

AMPP Excellence in Coating Craftsmanship Project Awarded for the Yellow Line Tunnel and Bridge Rehabilitation

AMPP Excellence Award

The AMPP Excellence in Coating Craftsmanship Project Award is presented by the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP). This prestigious award recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of protective coatings and materials protection. It honors projects that demonstrate exceptional skill, innovation, and craftsmanship in the application and management of protective coatings. Recipients of this award are acknowledged for their superior performance in preserving and extending the life of valuable infrastructure through advanced coating techniques and quality control measures.

This year, GPI won the AMPP Excellence in Coating Craftsmanship Project Award as part of the WMATA Yellow Line & Bridge Rehabilitation Project team, recognized for our outstanding quality control and assurance efforts.

GPI provided protective coatings-related quality control and quality assurance services for this Potomac River Bridge and Tunnel rehabilitation. Kiewit Infrastructure performed this project for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) under one of the first construction manager at risk (CMAR) contracts for WMATA. GPI was the sub-consultant responsible for structural steel painting quality documentation and certification.

This $300M project included cleaning and painting the structural steel liners of dual subway tunnels between L’Enfant Plaza and the Potomac River. The scope of work was closely coordinated with tunnel grouting, steel panel repairs and replacements, and utility replacements. Specialized rail-mounted equipment was used for cleaning and painting. All structural steel was abrasive blast cleaned to an SSPC SP-10 near-white condition, and a 3-coat zinc acrylic paint system was applied. Each steel-lined tunnel spans approximately 1,500 linear feet and has approximately 150,000 square feet of painted structural steel.

GPI provided final design reviews and procedure adjustments to better align painting procedures and materials with the sub-grade environment. GPI provided multiple staff for round-the-clock shift work to maintain the work schedule during tunnel outage periods. GPI inspected all work to ensure conformance with project specifications.  This included, but was not limited to, work area preparation, containment inspection, surface preparation cleanliness and contamination testing, surface profile measurement, measuring environmental conditions for painting, paint material inspection, quality and completeness of coating application, and thickness of each applied paint layer for the coating system.  All work was documented on daily inspection reports completed for each inspector for each operation.

The project team of Kiewit, Blastech Enterprises, Caliber Consulting, Sherwin Williams, and GPI was awarded the AMPP Excellence in Coating Craftmanship Project Award for 2023.
