Richard Dunne Appointed Transportation Research Board Committee Chair

Dick DunneBoston, MA – Richard (“Dick”) Dunne, National Director of Bridge Preservation for GPI, has been appointed Chairman of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Standing Committee on Structures Maintenance (AKT40). Dick has been involved with TRB for 30 years and is currently Principal Investigator for the Implementation of Bridge Preservation Actions and a member of the Bridge Preservation Committee and Joint Subcommittee on Truck Size and Weight. Dick previously served as Chair of the Standing Committee on General Structures (AFF10) and Standing Committee on Innovative Highway Structures and Appurtenances (AKB10).

The Standing Committee on Structures Maintenance is primarily concerned with the maintenance of transportation structures including bridges and sign structures, with an emphasis on maintenance materials, actions, and decisions related to coatings, metal corrosion and underwater repair and construction. Dick’s responsibilities as Chairman include developing research needs statements to improve practitioner’s ability to maintain the nation’s transportation structures in a state of good repair. He will also oversee the review of technical papers, develop webinars, maintain a diverse committee membership, and select presentations for the Annual Meeting.

“The Transportation Research Board is a place where transportation infrastructure owners at the Federal, State, and Local levels, design professionals, contractors, planners, academia and material suppliers come together to discuss issues facing the nation’s transportation infrastructure and share ideas and opportunities to address those issues,” Dick says. “The most interesting aspect is the topics can range from the granular – say, optimizing or improving the mix design of asphalt or and/or concrete – to the grandeur – what our transportation infrastructure should look like so it serves the transportation needs of today through 50 – 100 years in the future.”
