The Arlington County Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility is a vital infrastructure project that supports the County’s growing transit needs while embracing sustainability and innovation.
This state-of-the-art Type II maintenance facility was designed to accommodate the current fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses while providing flexibility for future fleet expansion. The site also integrates surface parking and charging stations for the County’s Battery Electric Buses (BEB), aligning with Arlington’s commitment to environmental stewardship and clean energy initiatives.
GPI provided comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services. We designed advanced systems, including lighting circuitry and convenience receptacles for BEB charging, as well as interconnection for photovoltaic solar panels installed on the parking garage and maintenance building. The facility also features thoughtfully designed spaces for transit operations, administration, and bus operator support, such as locker rooms, a break room, a quiet room, and a gym, ensuring a positive and productive environment for transit employees.
Collaboration was at the heart of this project. Working closely with Arlington County authorities, structural and industrial engineers, architects, and contractors, GPI addressed unique challenges, including limited utility sources for power, water, and sewer. Through this teamwork, we delivered solutions that met the County’s high standards for efficiency and reliability.
The project incorporates cutting-edge sustainable design practices, including energy recovery systems, variable air volume (VAV) air handling units, high-efficiency domestic water heaters and boilers, a green roof, light-harvesting technology, and an emergency generator. A detached, above-ground parking garage was also included, providing 125 personal vehicle spaces with EV charging stations, an elevator, and a dedicated generator. The project is on track to achieve LEED Silver Certification, underscoring Arlington County’s commitment to sustainability.
This facility represents a significant step forward in Arlington County’s efforts to provide reliable, eco-friendly public transit while enhancing the quality of life for residents. By delivering a facility that supports efficient transit operations, promotes sustainability, and prioritizes the well-being of transit staff, this project will serve as a cornerstone for the community for years to come.
