Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Pennsylvania Turnpike Southern Beltway

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s Southern Beltway, also known as PA Turnpike 576, is a tolled freeway located in the southern and western suburbs of Pittsburgh. This project adheres to mandates that major transportation initiatives be developed with environmental sensitivity, incorporating input from the public and environmental resource agencies.

Various alternatives, including no-build, transit, roadway upgrades, and new highways, were thoroughly evaluated. The central segment of the Southern Beltway, known as the Route 22 to I-79 section, involves an $800 million investment covering 13 miles. It begins at the southern terminus of the Findlay Connector at the U.S. Route 22 Interchange, extending southeast to an interchange with I-79 and a local connection at Morganza Road near the Allegheny/Washington County line. This development is expected to bring substantial economic growth to rural northwestern Washington County. Recognizing the complexity of constructing a new 13-mile roadway, the Route 22 to I-79 project was divided into nine construction sections.

GPI played a crucial role in the Southern Beltway project, supplying project management, construction inspection, and material testing services for three out of the nine construction sections. The specific sections covered were Section 55A1 (an awardee of the Golden Boot Award), Section 55A2, Section 55B, and drainage and stream restoration on SR 980. These sections collectively span 10 miles and encompass significant elements such as 13 bridges, 4 culverts, a major intersection, roadway geometry realignments, a new connector road, and over 14 million cubic yards of excavation.

Additionally, GPI provided construction management services for the new 60,000 sqft maintenance facility at Section 55M which included constructability reviews for structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing during the design phase as well as systems commissioning services during construction.
