John Simkulet, PE, is the Branch Manager for the Albany Branch of GPI, spanning from the New York offices in Albany and Kingston to all staff in Vermont. John has been with GPI for 36 years and has a broad background in bridge design. His project experience includes several long span bridge rehabilitiations, including the Newburgh-Beacon, Ogdensburg, Whirlpool, Lewiston-Queenston, Tappan-Zee, Castleton, and Crown Point Bridges.
John is presently involved with the Association for Bridge Construction and Design (ABCD) and Association of State Highway Engineers (ASHE) and serves as a committee member for the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York’s Bridge Authority and Eastern Region Committees.
Outside of work, John enjoys golfing, gardening, watching sports, and playing guitar.

What do you like or appreciate most about working at GPI?
I appreciate the way GPI is always looking for ways to improve Employee Satisfaction, whether it’s improving our benefits, maintaining our costs, sharing in profits, etc. They strive to treat every role as equal.
What has been your greatest achievement or your proudest moment while working at GPI?
Hunts Point 2 was a great project to be a part of and really displayed the many talents of GPI. This award-winning project was staffed from several branches where each office had a different portion to complete. We had strong coordination through weekly Teams meetings and project filing through ProjectWise.
Why did you choose this career?
I went on a field trip as a second-year civil engineering student to a construction site where they were setting curved steel girders and diaphragms for a replacement bridge. I decided then to concentrate in structures and was lucky enough to land at GPI in the bridge design group.
